SMA OBSERVER CENTER

Array Configuration Schedule

The SMA configuration schedule is driven primarily by two factors:

  • the relative numbers of requests for different configurations in approved observing proposals
  • the right ascension distribution of approved observing targets in different configurations
  • the availability of antennas

The array configuration schedule for 2021B is:

Compact --> Extended

Due to transporter reliability issues, which affected the end of 2021A, along with a host of critical hardware and software maintenance and upgrade tasks, the SMA will pause science operations in late January, and resume operations between 4 and 6 weeks later, by no later than the 2nd week of March 2022.

The end of the 2021B semester may be extended to accommodate the science program, especially if the February hiatus lasts for more than five weeks.

The current timeline, subject to change, is:

Semester 2021B Configuration Schedule
configuration start end
compact 16 Nov 2021 late Jan 2022
-hiatus- late Jan 2022 early Mar 2022
extended early Mar 2022 15 May 2022*

*End of semester may be extended to accommodate science program especially if the February hiatus lasts for more than five weeks.

Reconfiguration of the array typically requires 3 days, including antenna moves and recalibration. Schedule is subject to change.
